Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
At our school, we have a very unique Art Buddies class. This is an art elective for our students in the cluster program with moderate disabilities like autism, Down Syndrome, intellectual disabilities, and cerebral palsy. We also have an amazing group of general education students in the class and everyone creates together.
Together, they make amazing art projects, practice social skills, work collaboratively, and build friendships over the course of the year.
Our projects are modified to support all students' disabilities and we draw, paint, sketch, collage, and more. These supplies will provide our class with materials such as paint, electric cardboard cutters, embroidery materials, markers, paper, glue guns, and more for a comprehensive art experience while also supporting students' sensory needs.
As a low-income school, we often need supplies that are not provided in the school budget. Supporting this project allows us to offer varied and exciting projects in our classes. Many of our students have limited experience in art due to budget cuts over the years. Throughout the year, the buddies paint, sculpt, collage, draw, design, and build as they build friendships and grow to understand how all learners can be artists!
