This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach first grade in a high poverty community in New York city. 80% of the students at my school receive free lunch. My students are largely from an English as a Second Language population. They are eager to learn, but have to overcome language barriers and lack of resources at home.
My students need to learn basic addition and subtraction facts in order to be successful in math. For many of my students, this is a difficult concept for their age. They need to be able to see and feel the items that they are adding and subtracting. For English Language Learners, seeing and feeling can help them put a "name" on something. With New York city budget cuts, these materials will not be available any other way.
My children will master addition and subtraction facts with the set of Jumbo Magnetic Numbers, Counters and the Magnetic Board. The numbers are large enough to be displayed on the board throughout the day. The students will understand the operations because they will be able to see and feel the plus, minus and equal sign and use the counters along with it.
Your generosity will allow my class to count, build number sentences and form simple equations. They will be able to use the counters to help visualize quantities. The counters will be used to sort, make patterns and write and solve number stories. You will help American students keep up with children in the rest of the world, by setting up a strong math foundation.
