This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I have returned to AACS after 5 years. I have returned because I have never encountered a community like ours. AACS is truly a community, we depend on the support of our families. Teachers are dedicated in ways I have rarely seen. AACS has little to work with and has always found ways to make it work. We do it for our amazing kids, who also build greatness from the basement of a church.

Our student population is 93% economically disadvantaged (free or reduced-price lunch), and yet from the moment you step through our doors, only the richness of culture and community is felt.

Proudly representing Latino culture in one of Los Angeles's fastest gentrifying neighborhood leaves our students and faculty continually making the most out of very little.

AACS students graduate at higher rates, persist in college at higher rates, and attend UCs and CSUs at higher rates than the averages for the state of California. Our kids deserve access to quality books in every classroom to continue fostering a lifelong love of reading and independent learning.

My Project

The classroom was a jail of other people’s interests. The library was open, unending, free. Slowly, I was discovering myself.”

Developing the library of books available to our students will open up the gates of freedom to every inquiring mind. This library is not for any structured class cycle. These books are for pleasure. These books are for empowerment. These books are for when our students crave doing more.
