Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students come to class eager to learn daily! Their levels range from kindergarten to second grade. The one thing that brings them all together is their love for the arts! They are able to express themselves and share their thinking with others easily through visual arts.
This year, I teach a second grade self-contained ESL class in a Title I school.
My students are mostly Chinese and Spanish. Their academic skills range as well as their language levels. In the short amount of time since the year has begun, my students have already shown how respectful they are not only towards adults but towards one another as well. They are always willing to share and respond to each other using proper manners. I've realized that some of their academic gaps could be filled in by allowing them to show and express themselves creatively. That has shown the most discourse within our classroom. Not only do they compliment one another but they also share ideas and suggestions when working on art projects.
My Project
This year, our school has implemented Choice Time twice a week for an hour each day. Students are given an option to choose between four stations of arts and crafts. They are given a general topic (puppet making, dioramas, etc) and materials at each station. All of a sudden, they are all engaged using materials and discussing their plans. During Choice Time, students are also taught to become problem solvers. If one idea doesn't work, they think about how they can make it work to make their visual a reality. Most importantly, they share their problem solving with others. Helping us get more materials will help greatly with student creativity. My students need felt, tissue paper, craft sticks, Pom poms, pipe stems, mold and play moon sand, quills, collage shapes, playstix, acrylic gemstones, crinkle strips and village block sets. Students will use the materials during Choice Time. This will allow them to become more creative with materials. After Choice Time they can't wait to share!
By donating to my project, you will help my students to be able to continue expressing themselves.
Unfortunately, their ideas cannot be fully created because of lack of materials in our classroom. Realizing that this was a strength that was shared by all of them, I really want to make an impact in their lives and allow them to enjoy the arts as much as possible. You can help make that a reality for my students!
