My Project

I am an English IV and AP Literature teacher at our school, an open enrollment charter school that is a Title I school and a minority-serving institution. Over the past two years, my students have requested two things from me: that I find more literature that centers black experiences, and that I keep teaching them short stories.

Jordan Peele's anthology "Out There Screaming: An Anthology of New Black Horror" is a short story collection edited by one of the premiere voices in horror, and is doubly special because this anthology finds the horror and terror underlying the Black experience in the United States.

My students typically come into my class worried about their skill in reading; my school specializes in taking kids who have been poorly served by their previous schools and teachers and catching them up, fast. My students have been known to advance anywhere from 2 grade levels of growth in their reading to the equivalent of 6 years of English instruction. The key to their growth? We believe in the potential of ALL kids to grow and learn, to change the world as leaders and scholars.

The secret to my success?

I try to teach stuff that will intrigue and engage my kids, and my kids LOVE scary stories. If you help me with this project, you'll be giving my students the gift of engaging material as well as showing them we understand the necessity of centering black voices and black experiences to encourage student growth.
