Hello, World!: Composing and Performing Our Class Stories

My students need this artist residency program to expand their creativity, collaboration, confidence, and comprehension in fine and performing arts.

My Students

My students are curious, energetic, and kind. Their smiles and singing bring joy to our school and community. Their backgrounds are incredibly diverse, and some of them are growing up facing immense adversity. Nonetheless, their compassion and ambition are remarkable.

During music classes, students sing, play song-games, play instruments, compose, read and create musical stories, and so much more!

Many of my students are immigrants and refugees whose formal education might begin at this school. Yet others will spend their entire childhood at this school, entering in preschool at age 3 and passing through to 8th grade before moving on to high school. Their musical experiences in class are especially important because most students do not take private lessons, so I aim to give them the best instruction I can!

Many of my students also have disabilities, ranging from delays in math and reading to diagnoses of autism or impairments. Our students practice compassion by learning to work with people whose abilities may not match what the broader world expects. Music class is a particularly inclusive setting for these interactions. Each lesson emphasizes social and emotional learning within the context of musical learning.

My Project

My students are fortunate to have both music and art classes on a near-weekly basis, but when the opportunity presented itself for our 4th graders to write and perform their own class operas in collaboration with professional performers and composers, I knew we needed to find a way to bring the residency program to our school! Through this partnership, each of our school's three 4th grade classrooms will write their own story around a particular geographical or historical theme, compose songs and accompaniments to incorporate into their story, design a set, learn a choreographed dance, and then produce a staged performance.

This residency brings students into ongoing contact with professional artists who promote creativity, collaboration, self-confidence, and comprehension across art forms.

The process will strengthen students' writing, speaking, musical, artistic, kinesthetic, and social-emotional skills. The performance opportunities will also build community as relatives and friends are invited into the school as audience members.

Our teacher team is eager to implement this residency and needs the expertise of these teaching artists in order for the project to be successful. The host organization is graciously accommodating our school's budgetary restrictions by reducing rates in order to make this opportunity accessible to our students.
