Their natural curiosity, positive attitudes, and endless energy are a teacher's dream class. Our school serves an ethnically diverse student population with 60% of students coming from low-income homes.
My Project
My students attend the largest public elementary school in the city of Chicago. As an arts magnet school, they travel from every neighborhood in our city to be part of a positive, safe, and exciting community of eager learners. Our diverse student population has been deeply affected by the COVID-19 crisis and will experience significant challenges in the coming school year, both in the classroom and during home learning. The Chicago Public Schools has currently planned a hybrid learning model. Students will learn from home three days a week and experience in-classroom teaching two days a week.
Meeting the needs of children from such differing home situations presents unique challenges to remote-learning.
My student's parents greatly value education and are very concerned about their child's academic and social-emotional growth during this crisis. The Classroom in a Box will provide families with the hands-on learning materials young children need for success. The large boxes will be filled with colored paper, drawing tools, writing journals, books, games, and more! They are even the perfect size to use as lap desks for first-graders! The smaller boxes and zip cases will store the reading and math supplies that make learning fun. These organized kits will be used during our interactive online classes together to build friendships and to meet learning goals. We need your help to make this school year special for a fantastic group of talented first-graders!
