Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I have the opportunity to teach a unique group of students. I teach a class of multicultural and mainly multilingual students. Many of the students are learning English for the first time. We are part of a large school in Bronx, New York.
What I love the most about my students is watching how engaged they get in different activities and watching them work together to discover and solve new problems.
First grade leads to significant changes for my students, they enter my classroom very timidly and unsure of themselves and I have the opportunity to help them grow and watch them mature. Children are extremely resilient and are such sponges for new knowledge and experiences.
My Project
I have a class of students that speak many different languages and are from many different countries. I love the diversity in my classroom and what I learn from my own students. At least a third of my students are new to the United States and new to learning English.
I want my students to feel comfortable as they are transitioning into a new life at such a young age, and that means being able to provide them with materials and literature that they can relate to and make a connection to.
When we discuss different cultures and practices my students love to participate and share their personal stories and experiences. By providing my students reading material they can relate to it keeps them engaged and makes them feel part of the classroom family and community that we create together. These stories also help my students learn about other cultures as well as multiple literacy and writing strategies that we focus on throughout the school year.
