We have three amazing classes of 5th graders that are a mixture of ELD, Special Needs, Low income, and Gifted. They are egar students who are ready to learn and trying their best on a daily basis.
A third of our students come from low income families that cannot provide them with the resources they need to help give their children the best education possible.
These students are the ones on the free/reduced lunch list. With all of our diverse students, we are constantly modifying to accommodate all their needs.
My Project
Every time I throw wastes in the trash can, I can't help but notice all the cans and bottles that can be recycled around campus. I have been educating my students about the many ways of helping the environment and really zoning in on recycling. I feel that educating kids at an early age will help them be more environmentally wise in the decisions they make. But year after year students have the same complaints.
"But Ms K, where can we put the cans and bottles if there are no bins on the yard?" That made me think, we keep educating the kids and setting expectations for them but make it difficult for the kids to succeed.
So, I was thinking, if we had a recycling bin next to the trash can, the kids will have an easier time making the right decision.
We plan to have parent volunteers gather all the recyclables once a week and take them to the recycling center. The money we raise through recycling will be put aside for students who cannot afford to pay for our 3-day trip to Astrocamp this upcoming Spring. Therefore we are creating a win-win situation. The environment stays cleans and the children who can't afford to pay get a chance to go on a once in a lifetime experience.
