My Students

Do you remember that sense of wonder and awe you had in science? Remember the feeling of wanting to know how what you just saw happened? These are the feelings and memories and I am trying to create for my students.

My students live in an area in OK that was recently affected by an EF5 tornado.

I teach 8th grade science and my students are at all different levels. Our school is classified as high poverty. Several of my students suffered damage and loss to their homes during the tornado and are still trying to recover today. So the supplies that they depend on having in class have been damaged and destroyed. Having more activities that I can use to catch their attention will be a great way to keep them engaged in class.

My Project

8th graders are not always good at picturing what will happen. They still need the concrete experience of seeing an event happen. Having materials to perform experiments like the disappearing rainbow to show acids and bases and the mysterious liquid experiment will help my students have the concrete experiences to help them understand some of the basic concepts in chemistry. I have also requested materials like viscosity tubes to help my students understand the concept of viscosity. One other item I have requested is a set of happy and sad balls to help my students gain a better understanding of the concept of density which they always seem to struggle with. Chemistry seems to be a hard topic for my students to understand and these demonstration and activity kits will give us more experiences in the classroom to help my students with these topics.

These materials will give my students a visual picture of what we are talking about in chemistry and will hopefully help them feel more prepared for chemistry when they get to the high school.
