Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Imagine trying to see the book the teacher is holding but except that it is book size and too small. This is the challenge my students face when I'm teaching a shared reading lesson.
I teach 4th grade to 26 eager scholars in a Title One school in a NYC public school in Queens.
My school is truly a "melting pot" of cultures.
Many of my students are English Language Learners and need a variety of strategies to improve their reading and writing skills and also to learn content so that they will be ready to move on in their academic lives.
Budget cuts have made anything except bare basics impossible. My children need and deserve more. Most of them are first generation Americans and their families are struggling to survive. They want the best for their children but technology is a luxury, not a necessity for them.
I want to bring the world to my students so that they can take their place in the world.
My Project
I need a projector in my class so that I can do shared reading activities, watch educational videos as a class, and view the Internet as a group.
I have my own laptop but don't have personal resources to buy a projector to go with it. Overheads are last century. My children need modern technology.
With the projector my students, in shared reading, can see a page from a book as a class and can follow along as I read. In shared writing, my students can all see an exemplar of a piece of writing and we can discuss it together.
With my laptop I can connect to the internet and my children can see the world around them.
We can watch videos as motivation to a writing piece.
Having a projector in my class will expand my students' learning capacity and bring the world to them.
No longer will they have to strain to see a page I am referring to.
This piece of modern technology will move my children forward in their learning.
