Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Middle school can be a challenging and exciting time in the life of a student. I feel very fortunate to be a part of their journey during this chapter of their stories. I teach math and science to 6th-grade students and work as the Associated Student Body advisor for the older students. Additionally, I host an after-school club called the "STEAM Team." Every morning, our diverse student body comes to school, early so they can receive a free breakfast to start their day off right. 100% of our students qualify for a free lunch. Our independent and mature students are often in charge of getting themselves and younger siblings out the door, and to school on time. Although this area is known by some for the gangs and crime, it is filled with hard-working families and smart students.
Our students are lively and enthusiastic learners filled with curiosity that inspires everyone at the school!
My Project
My students are so excited about making things. Anything! They especially love to cut out vinyl with our Cricut machines and have decorated so many different surfaces at our school. When I told them we could design our own hats, mugs and more they were immediately organizing a list of projects, ideas, and who was going to get to go first! I love their enthusiasm; it's contagious! So I am writing this project to help make their dreams happen.
These materials, including the Display4top 5 in 1 Transfer Heat press will allow the students to celebrate their individuality with personal art and designs that promote school spirit and kindness.
Middle school students need an opportunity to express themselves as they learn to be proud of who they are. The students and I agreed that our first projects should include an element that promotes kindness but still also shows their unique style. I'm excited to see what they will come up with.
Our school embraces STEAM learning. We will be integrating many STEAM concepts into this project. The students will be designing with a new online design software. In math class, they will be learning to calculate the unit rate cost of each item. As students start to create they will focus on the engineering design principals we have developed in our science classes.
