I teach in an urban school district. I have class sizes of 30-35 9th grade students.
We are a brand new school and have very limited supplies. Earth Science is not a state tested course and we find it difficult to get funding to buy materials we need for our subject.
This project will be very useful when we do our unit on weather. I would like the students to see that land (sand) heats faster and cools faster than the ocean (water). This lab would enable students to generate a hypothesis, record data, analyze and graph data, and make conclusions. Afterwards we can discuss how the unequal heating of earth affects weather and how seabreeze and landbreeze circulations occur.
You will make it possible for my students to see how the sun is our earth's main source of energy. My students will be able to complete a hands-on activity that would require them to keep data, graph, analyze, and draw conclusions rather than reading about it in a textbook.
