This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students live in some of the poorest neighborhoods in Oklahoma City. Many live in food-insecure households, and the neighborhoods in which they live are "food deserts" meaning that many live miles away from the nearest grocery store.

Our school has 95+% free or reduced lunch student population.

For many of our kids, their best meals, their only secure meals are the school cafeteria breakfasts and lunches. On the weekends they are on their own except for the food provided to them through the school food bank program. They depend of this for their life essentials, particularly the life essentials represented by healthy foods and snacks. Since they live in a true food desert, the only type of food available to many of them is high-calorie, low-nutritional junk and fast foods. These foods contribute to the problems many have with diabetes and obesity.

My Project

I would like to have healthy snack foods available for our students through our school food bank. We do receive food donations from the community food bank and occasionally from private donors, but these resources are strained due to the fact that they must meet the needs of the entire city. These food resources would make it possible for our children to have food to get them through the weekend or even during the school day when breakfast or lunch just was not enough to keep them focused on learning.

Our children face stress from many sources including gangs, domestic violence, absentee parents, and drug dealing.

Giving them the life essentials of good, healthy food will help to reduce the stress of food insecurity and give them the "brain boost" they need to succeed in school.
