Hearts, Slime, and Spiker Box for our Medical STEM Class

My Project
Medical Detectives is a STEM class that we offer as an elective for our middle schoolers. Our 7th and 8th grade students get the chance to practice being doctors and other medical professionals for a semester. In this class, students learn about the human body while simultaneously learning about various STEM careers in the medical field. To keep my students engaged, we love to have as many hands-on science experiences as possible.
We dissect sheep brains to help us learn how human brains are structured.
We research the circulatory system and make slime models of human blood to learn about blood’s composition. We even practice questioning, assessing, and diagnosing patients with diseases using our “disease dictionary”.
I would love to include two new labs this year: a spiker box and sheep hearts. The spiker box is to show how neurons transmit signals and the sheep hearts would allow students to complete a dissection to learn about the anatomy of the heart.
Having this project funded would give 200+ middle school students the chance to experience fun, real world science while introducing them to future careers!
