Heart to Heart Learning in Special Education

My Project

I am a special education teacher in a large urban district. I provide academic and behavioral instruction to students in Kindergarten through grade 2. My students live in an area where they may not have access to every day materials and I’d love to support their learning with resources to make them feel educated, safe and loved. The goal of my project is to provided academic instruction while also focusing on the emotional needs of my students. Since my learning environment is focused on the social emotional development of my students, having access to educational and behavioral supports will assist in meeting some of their IEP goals. Many of my students require “movement breaks” during the day and the hopscotch play mats would be a great way for them to move their bodies in a safe way. I have flexible seating in my classroom and the floor cushions and floor tiles would be helpful for students who need a place to sit instead of a chair. Hand fidgets also help my students focus while listening to lessons. Some students also struggle with decoding, so I’d love to use the Elkonin boxes and decodable reader texts support their learning to read. My kinesthetic learners will benefit from the elkonin boxes because it provides them with a multi sensory approach. I will also use clay and playdoh to build words and phonemes for a more hands on strategy to reading. My students are special because they all have a love of learning in school. I love how unique they are and how each student learns in their own way!
