My Students

My students are amazing kids who face many challenges both at home and at school. My students all have various disabilities, but they don't let their disabilities hold them back.

All of my students are unique, but one thing is the same in each of them: they love to learn!

My students come from a variety of backgrounds and face many challenges before even entering our school. We work together every day to overcome those challenges and reach new heights. I work with about 75 special education students every week, reaching kids with various disabilities. My students love to move, explore, and play.

My Project

Heart Learning, which is what we call social emotional learning at our school, is the foundation of happy, healthy kids. My students, many of whom who have faced traumas and significant life stressors even before arriving at school, need all the social, emotional and behavioral support they can get, before they can even begin to learn reading or math. Oftentimes, especially for kids with disabilities, it is important to directly teach social, emotional and behavioral skills, rather than just hope that they pick up on these tools. My students need tools and resources to help them learn social and emotional skills that they can use now and in the future.

When we have the tools to directly teach and learn mindfulness, self-esteem, self-regulation and empathy, not only do we support our kids to become kind and empathetic citizens, but we also help prepare their brains for academic learning.

Teaching mindfulness and self-regulation skills has been found to improve attention, increase compassion for others and reduce feelings of stress and anxiety. These new books, games and tools, will lay the foundation for our social, emotional and behavioral growth, allowing students to learn about emotions and regulation skills without stigma. The games, such as Playing CBT and The Coping Skills game will allow my students to learn emotional tools in a fun way with their peers. These materials will give my students the tools they need to take their own mental health into their own hands.
