This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
"My school is a public school with in a very large school district in which resources are very limited. My school is in a low income area of a very large city. Our school's free and reduce lunch is over 80%. I must purchase most of my supplies at the dollar store in order to complete labs at an AP level. My juniors and seniors deserve a chance just like the magnet schools in our district to do high quality AP labs.
AP Biology Labs help students acquire the skills necessary for lab classes in college.
My students deserve to do labs just like other college bound high school students in our district do. My supplies are very, very limited along with a lack of a real lab class. I make do with what I have but would appreciate help in any form. My students can not believe how I recycle, reuse the littlest items in which some teachers throw out.
This lab would give the students hands on experience along with a better understanding of how our circulatory system transports oxygen and other nutrients to all cells and carries carbon dioxide and other waste products away. Various factors can affect the rate of circulation. This is a major concept in Biology as well as AP Biology (lab 10) circulatory physiology and this would be an exceptional addition to my classroom as well as the program these students are currently in.
I am asking for 16 blood pressure kits and 2 AP Biology Lab 10 for my students. My students will be able to take their own pulse and blood pressure which is a vital skill for students wanting to become doctors and nurses. The 2 AP Biology lab 10 kits will allow the students to measure the effect of temperature on the heart rate of a small invertebrate, Daphnia magna. Both of these hands on labs will be able the enhance the curriculum of my course for these college bound students. I will be able to use these supplies year after year in all of my biology classes. All I would need to order is the Daphnia magna. I will be able to use this with 3 of my freshmen biology class along with my junior and senior IB/AP biology classes. I would share these items with my Anatomy and Physiology teacher too.
Please make this reality come true for my students, whom would love to investigate the circulatory system. They will also be able to collect data on the pulse and blood pressure of their classmates and analyze this data. There are no replacements for hands on activities in a science class.
