My Students

I am so excited to be working with kindergartners, first graders and second graders this year ! As a K-1 facilitator, I have the opportunity to work with both students and teachers. K-2 students are inquisitive by nature. They WANT to learn and need us to fuel the many questions they have by building on their creativity and interests. These years are crucial in setting the tone for the rest of their school life.

I have the privilege of working at a diverse, Title I school with students from all walks of life.

We have a very diverse student population, with kids representing a wide range of socio-economic, and ethnic groups. Our school is very different from other schools in our district because of its size. We have one class per grade level with less than 25 kids in each class! Having a small school provides opportunities for us to reach across grades and create a close knit school family. The size and diversity within our school pushes us all to think in new ways and to confront our preconceived views.

My Project

Social emotional learning is essential to developing strong, confident and well rounded students. People deal with an array of feelings and social interactions over the course of a day. Teaching students specific strategies and helping them develop self- awareness and self-management of emotions is critical to their well-being. Our little ones often have the biggest emotions and need the most support in developing self-regulation and mindfulness of their emotions. Emotional tools and strategies need to be specifically taught and modeled in order for children to use them effectively and independently.

These materials will help my students to learn how to make

appropriate and responsible decisions while developing their emotional self-awareness and self-regulation. We have a cool down area in our classroom where students can go to take a break when their emotions seem too big for them to handle on their own. The weighted lap blanket, and other sensory tools will provide students with a way to relax and calm themselves. Research shows it takes a full 30 minutes for the fight or flight instincts triggered during emotional stress (strong emotional responses) to subside. These tools will help my students to make responsible self-regulatory choices and develop positive habits to carry with them throughout their lives. Schools so often focus on creating life-long learners. Isn't it just as important for us to develop students as life- long problem solvers and provide them with social- emotional habits they can use throughout their lives?
