This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Students in my 9th and 10th grade Earth Science class are recent immigrants who are learning both Science and English. In our school, students work on projects in teams with classmates from around the world, to practice new skills, new content, and a new language.
With students from all over the world, speaking over ten different languages, the classroom is a very exciting place.
Students are learning new vocabulary every day and experiencing science in a new language. Groups work together to create models, design labs, and record podcasts about science.
My Project
"A volcano has erupted in your town!", "Why did it erupt here?", "Are the people of your town in danger?", "What is going to happen?"
In our class, students are creating a Volcanic Eruption News Report to answer these questions for the people near the volcano of their choice.
Since their News Report will be shared on the radio, students will therefore create a podcast.
Podcasts are a fun way for students to communicate science to their community. Headphones allow students to hear the language they are practicing when they recording and listen to podcasts. Students practice writing and speaking English through these podcasts, and with headphones, they can listen to themselves record. Headphones and audiosplitters also allow us to share our podcasts in a gallery format, and podcast listeners can move around the room and listen to each story.
