My eighth graders are in need of calculators and headphones for financial literacy. For our class, we use calculators on a daily basis and require headphones at times to work through various financial problems.
When it comes to money, everyone should feel like they have ownership over their own finances.
Making sure that my students feel confident when they interact with money is very important so the items that I request are essential to their success, not just in my class, but for their own futures.
Especially when it comes to our budgeting tables and reading scenarios where we have to add up and subtract money from a person’s budget- It’s important to be accurate and double-check our numbers with the use of calculators. For headphones especially for my students with IEPs, or with diverse learning needs, headphones help them focus, but they also help them obtain what they need to know in another way other than just having them read it themselves, especially if reading is something they struggle with. I hope this clarifies why these two items are such essential needs for my classroom.
At the end of the day, my students deserve the world. They do the best that they know; but if we’re not prepared for them- how will they be prepared for others in the future? When resources as basic as headphones and calculators are hard to request or obtain it takes away hope for teachers like myself- and that’s one thing teachers still strive for every day, at least the ones at my school do, because our kids give us so much of it in who they are and their aspirations. I just adore them, so I hope I can get these for them.
