Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
“The function of education is to teach one to think intensively and to think critically. Intelligence plus character - that is the goal of true education,” Martin Luther King, Jr.
I aim to help my students own the skills and confidence to realize their dreams.
I want them to dream big. The elementary school I work in has about 400 students, most of whom come from low-income families of various backgrounds.
I teach in Spanish bilingual classrooms where more than 90% of students are English Language Learners. Some of my students are also not proficient in Spanish. They often come with low reading and writing scores in Spanish and English. Many of the students are not yet independent thinkers and have difficulty articulating their thoughts both orally and in writing. Often they lack the confidence to problem solve and defend their thinking in both languages. Additionally, they are often intimidated by English. My goal is to show them all they can do in both languages.
My Project
Most of my students have been learning in small city apartments and crowded homes with one to six siblings running around. I am almost used to the crying of babies and toddlers as I ask students to read or answer a math question. Cars honking, parents on the phone, and cartoons on TV are the new background to my instruction. Many of my students are not even close to grade level and while their own behaviors have improved they still have trouble paying attention. I hold small group sessions to support students with specific needs but I can hardly understand some students when they read. I need to be able to listen to pronunciation because my students are English learners and that requires even more work when I need to tune out other sounds. Please give us headphones with microphones so that we can listen and learn. I am asking for 30 headphones because I want to give two headphones to families with more than one school age child if they need them.
