Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
The students in my school are very diverse. I have students who have grown up all over the country, and I have other students who have never left our state. Students speak multiple languages at home, and some students are still learning English.
One thing all of my students have in common is that their high school diploma will open doors to the future—doors that may not have been available to their parents and grandparents.
All of our students will complete four years of math prior to graduation.
Our students are kind citizens. Instead of a senior prank, our senior class participates in 'Prank it Forward,' where they pay it forward and raise money for a community member in need. Whether it's a fellow classmate battling cancer, an elementary school student with an undiagnosed medical ailment, or a family who has experienced a tragedy, our students believe in kindness and inclusion. These are the role models that my freshmen look up to, and as they get their turn as seniors, those are the shoes they have to fill.
My Project
2020 has brought many challenges in the classroom and while some of our students are with us in the classroom every day, other students remain virtual learners and have yet to set foot in our physical classroom this year. One challenge we have run into is that some of our students do not have headphones in the classroom. This means that when students have a computer-based task or they are working collaboratively with virtual learners, the entire classroom is going to hear that discussion or activity which certainly creates additional distractions in the classroom. Headphones will allow students to remain focused on their individual task/group.
Even teenagers loves getting mail, and sending a postcard or personal note to a students' home will allow us another way to connect with our students.
Being able to build relationships with our students is important, and reaching out individually to them is another avenue we would like to continue to utilize. We can use these to recognize students for a job well done, reach out when they have not been attending classes, and also just for a general check in.
The final resource, protractors, will be used for a variety of lessons. From unit circles to measuring angles in a circle graph, special right triangles to a simple straight edge, these will be used in the classroom regularly with students of all levels.
