This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Have you ever listened to a great story that somebody has once told you? Unfortunately, my students struggle with listening to a great story. My students love to listen to me read a great story, but it is difficult for them to read it on their own. A listening center would be a great asset to us.

My students are inner city children with special needs that attend an urban school district in New Jersey.

They face poverty, hunger, and most have limited access to books at home. When they are in my classroom, they love to have books read to them. Most struggle with reading and that is why a listening center would be most valuable to my students. Although they are special needs and poverty stricken, my students still enjoy coming to school everyday.

My Project

I incorporate the Daily Five strategy on a daily basis to help improve my students' reading levels. The components are: Read to Self, Read to Someone, Listen to Reading, Work on Writing, and Word Work. The one missing component is Listening to Reading. The listening center would be used for all my students during center time.

A listening center would improve my struggling readers' literacy skills.

They would be able to recognize high frequency words as they are listening to the story. This would greatly assist with their vocabulary and fluency.
