My Students

Somewhere deep in the heart of the Midwest lies our city. It is the quintessential rural town that has always been described in books, television, and movies since the beginning of time. Families have lived here for generations and take pride in everything that the small town has to offer. The townspeople come out in force at the annual Kiwanis Pancake Breakfast, as well as the Strawberry Festival. They crowd the stands to see their hometown team play ball and line the streets during the annual homecoming parade. It is, indeed, a tiny piece of Midwestern paradise.

Our high school special education classroom is a place of growth in academics, personality, and citizenship.

We celebrate each other's successes while learning from each other's mistakes; in short, we try our best and come together as one team with the common goal of becoming productive citizens in a global society.

My students don't let their disabilities define who they are or what they are capable of, instead, they embrace them and the challenges they pose without fear.

My Project

My school has been blessed enough to be able to stay open with in-person this entire school year. Even better was the fact that students that wanted to stay home to remote learn were given the opportunity to do that as well. Although almost all of my students have came back to school, it hasn't been without its difficulties.

Coming back to school in the midst of a pandemic has caused some students to develop some anxiety.

Students have expressed feelings of fear and worry over catching COVID while at school or during extra-curriculars, while others are stressed out about factors outside of their control at home. When put together, these feelings have caused some of my students to have feelings of anxiousness that pop up at the most random of times. According to Stanford University Researchers, one way to reduce anxiety is to listen to music. "Listening to music seems to be able to change brain functioning to the same extent as medication... Music is something that almost anybody can access, making it an easy stress reduction tool." To help curb this anxiety, I would like to help those students that do not have headphones or ear buds, obtain their own set quality set that will last throughout high school so that they can use them to listen to the music that helps relieve their anxiety.
