My students need new musical programs and materials to perform and incorporate other subjects into the music classroom and curriculum.

My Students

"Music, in performance, is a type of sculpture. The air in the performance is sculpted into something." Frank Zappa so eloquently spoke of performance as a method of creativity. Performance is an art, and what better way to create art than to perform it?!

My first-fifth grade students are absolutely full of energy and creativity!

They look forward to music, because they know they can expect 45 minutes of energetic learning. Many of my students however, spend the majority of their day at school. Quite a few of these students come to our Title I school and eat breakfast, lunch, and then dinner in the after school program. Although, some of these students do not have much, they are extremely thankful for the few things they do have. They are thankful for a few drums and auxiliary instruments to make music with. They are thankful for a large music room with space to move. My wonderful, energetic, thankful students just need some encouragement and their doors begin to open to their full potential.

My Project

We are requesting multiple performance materials. With these materials our students will have a whole new range of performance opportunities. Our school puts on grade level programs, in addition to a school wide musical, each year. These programs take a lot of performance materials...and we're running out! These materials will afford the 1st-3rd grade students the opportunities to learn about and perform jazz music, use familiar Disney music to learn new music skills, learn about insects and animals with new programs and learn about the rain forest through performance. Older students will be able to incorporate music skills in musicals like "Summer Camp" and "Swamped." They will also learn about science through a program titled "Science Rocks." Students will also study the grand staff further by using new boomwhacker resources. Each new resource will allow students to further their studies of other subjects while in music class, creating a more comprehensive music program.

These resources will allow us to make more real life connections in the music classroom.

Students' music studies will become more comprehensive. Students will be more excited about studying other subjects when they are incorporated about the music classroom. They will be learning about a variety of subjects without even thinking about the connection. This will enforce all the things they are learning in their regular education classroom through the arts.
