Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

It is hard enough to get on stage to speak or perform, but imagine doing it with out the mics or PA system to be heard? Our PA system has broken and we need a new one.

We are a Title 1 school in the inner city.

We start at Pre-K and go onto 8th grade. Our 550 students are predominately minority students living at or below the poverty level. We are located next to government housing. In the last year we have received a Federal Magnet grant to help integrate our school. So we are now beginning to have more integrated population across color economic lines. Our Magnet theme is based on Museums. We are encouraging students to learn content through their exploration of museums and museum education. Through our Museum visits and presentations we also visit the arts.

My Project

As we move towards exploring the arts through museum work and and connecting it to our curriculum, we want the students to present "Museum" like pieces or performances. Students will be able to recreate dance performances or make up their own. The same will occur with the music they experience. A child may choose to do a performance piece or write a speech themselves. Once they get on the stage they need to be heard. Our students will develop confidence as they take the stage if they can hear their own voices. Part of a performance is interacting with your audience, seeing their reaction. So we want the students to be heard. It will also provide our students with the opportunity to do some public speaking to a larger audience than their classmates, thus preparing them for the world at large later in life.

We need a PA system in our auditorium.

Our students are learning a lot and have a lot to share and they need to be heard. We want them to have the opportunity to talk and perform and have people walk up to them and say, I heard you, you touched me. We don't want to see that student standing on that big stage shouting into the audience over a low murmur that has begun because the audience is bored due to a misunderstanding or clarification of what is being presented.
