My Students

If you walk into our classroom on a typical day, it might feel chaotic at first- students experimenting, typing on computers, mumbling out loud as they work out the lyrics for an original song about the states of matter. But look closely, and you'll see they're all learning in their own unique ways.

My 6th grade science scholars are a diverse bunch of students, who come with many different learning needs.

My classes are comprised of general education students, English Language Learners, and students with disabilities. The students, just like all of us, have many different styles of learning, such as visual, musical/auditory, verbal, kinesthetic, and logical. Each year I notice that a great many of them love science, because regardless of their reading levels or past educational experiences, it gives them the opportunity to work hands-on with topics they love, and new ideas that connect them to the world around them. They are naturally curious and bubbling with new research and experimental ideas, and I try my hardest to provide them with a space in which to foster this curiosity and build their inquiry and design skills.

My Project

As our world, and the department of education, begin to focus more and more on STEM, the role of technology in education becomes increasingly more important. Due to lack of access, my students come to me quite behind in their knowledge and ability to use laptops and other forms of technology. However, last year, my school received a grant for one laptop cart in every sixth grade classroom. This provides us with a wonderful opportunity to build their skills in technology and the engineering design process. One reason these new laptops are so beneficial is that I can individualize student learning to best fit their needs. For instance, I can differentiate their work based on their reading levels and learning styles. I can give students videos, computer modeling and coding projects, interactive games and reading assignments, computer-based experiments, songs, PowerPoint presentations, and much more!

Unfortunately, many of the students' families cannot buy their own headphones, which are essential for being able to individualize their learning.

Without headphones, students are easily distracted when working on different projects, and the classroom becomes an ineffective learning environment. Having a class set of headphones will help me more effectively serve my students with differentiated instruction, and provide an engaging classroom for student learning.
