There is nothing like the rhythms from around the world! My middle school students just need the instruments to play them. I teach K-8 music in an urban public school and am in need of percussion instruments for my students.
My 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students are very musically inclined but need instruments to express their skills. They love the percussive nature of their music and often say they like the “beat” of a certain song. Little do they know that many of these rhythms are hundreds of years old and come from all across the globe!
I want to bring djembes, doumbeks, and tubanos to my classroom so my students can play traditional grooves from parts of Africa, the Middle East, and Brazil. Playing in a drum ensemble creates a strong sense of community, develops teamwork, expands a person’s worldview, and is just so much fun! The energy of a room of students playing the drums is so uplifting and I want that experience for my students. Students will also learn how to read rhythms, the basic technique for each instrument, and about the country of each groove. Each day they will come in, get a drum, and play a groove from around the world. Students will have the opportunity to lead the group, play a solo, sing along, and get up and dance to the music we create. Students will also participate in drum circles where they will get to play their own rhythm and work together to play as one. The unit will end with the students playing for the school and parents in an assembly.
Please bring this new experience to my students! They will never forget playing in a drum ensemble with their classmates!
