My Students
My first grade class is an awesome, energetic, and extremely creative group of children. We are the only first grade class in our school and most of these students have been together since pre-K. These students are excited to learn and enthusiastic about being at school. They love coming in each day and teach me just as much as I teach them.
As spirited as my students are, many are faced with strong challenges at home including extreme poverty, broken homes, and incarcerated family members.
Many of my students have learned English as a second language with parents at home who speak little to no English.
Our school does a wonderful job of assisting these students and it is my wish to fulfill my role to the absolute best of my ability as well.
My Project
A large, mobile teaching easel is needed to help my students gain a better understanding of the various subjects we learn each day. It can accommodate literacy, language, math, science, social studies, and writing. This easel will allow students to learn through an interactive, hands-on approach using a variety of styles and manipulatives. The storage and organization features will allow for more time engaging, while spending less time gathering materials.
My students love learning about the world around them through real life and real time observations.
A butterfly nursery will allow students to see the life cycle of the butterfly in its entirety and in person. Students will have the opportunity to study the biology, behaviors, and different stages of the butterfly's life.
A literacy center would be very beneficial to help my students become competent, successful, and enthusiastic readers. Students will listen to and read along with books in a small group setting. This small group listening will help build confidence in student abilities and develop fluency while allowing one-on-one and partner discussions. The books I have chosen have narrations that encourage student involvement and exciting plots to keep the students engaged.
