My Students

I teach in a large school urban system that houses five different schools, including four PK-8 buildings and one high school. My school houses approximately 1,200 students that live in the Northeastern portion of the city. It is the largest of the four PK-8 buildings in the city. Our minority enrollment is around 42% of the student body. My school is filled with curious, creative, and hardworking students who support and challenge each other every day.

Specifically, I teach sixth grade, and it is important for me to always make sure my students are provided with every opportunity and every resource they need to be able to learn, work, and grow.

I teach on a team of six incredibly passionate and supportive educators. We have a strong sense of community with each other and model those relationships for our students. Together, we incorporate a variety of learning strategies, group work, flexible seating, and social and emotional learning techniques into our daily instruction. We practice what we preach and consider each other and our students family.

My Project

To get students motivated and connect their prior knowledge of content to current lessons, we often conduct Socratic Questioning sessions using a soccer ball. Students participate by raising their hands to volunteer to answer a question, and they answer when the soccer ball is thrown to them and they catch it. The soccer ball serves as a talking piece while the questions vary in complexity. By the end of the year, students become responsible for leading these Socratic Questioning sessions and create their own questions to ask their classmates.

The QBall throwable wireless microphone will give students a fun and innovative way to participate in classroom discussions, presentations, brain breaks, and icebreakers throughout the school year.

Classroom participation and engagement will soar with the usage of the QBall! All students in class will be given a voice to be heard and can hear from others. Students who never speak up in class will be more motivated to participate and get more involved in whole-group conversations. I can't wait for our class to engage in more meaningful discussions when using the QBall!
