My students need materials, such as speakers, markers and a Nook, to learn fundamental exercises in various modalities that will help them focus and learn better in the classroom.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Every time my students participate in a structured physical education (PE) class, they come back to the classroom being able to focus and with energy to continue learning and playing. But with the limited resources and space, I cannot take them out for PE as many times as they would like me to.
My kindergarten students attend a low social economic school in an urban area.
It is surrounded by crime and poverty. The majority of my students have a 12 hour school day by attending both the before and after school programs since their parents work. Despite their long day, my kindergarten students always come to school yearning to learn. Unfortunately, due to budget cuts and lack of resources, they sometimes do not get the opportunity to participate in certain sports since the community does not offer it to them. For that reason I try my best to expose them to as many activities and sports that I am able to with the resources and space I have.
My Project
The resources I selected will give my kindergarten students the opportunity to learn various sports by engaging in different modalities. I currently have a projector but not a computer to use it with. By having a small tablet and speakers, I will have the chance to engage my students by showing them child appropriate exercises as other students become active using the exercise cards. I can set up many stations that students can use by targeting different gross and fine motor skills. We can also use the e-reader to access various books from the public library and research topics of their interest.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, childhood obesity has more than tripled over the past 30 years and one in every five children age six to 11 is considered obese.
Currently 12 of my kindergarten students have high cholesterol, 3 are over weight and lack energy to work in the six hours we are in school and many do not get enough physical activity since they are more interested in using games that keep them sedentary.
