This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students hail from a neighborhood on Chicago's south side. 98% of our student population receives free or reduced lunch. Although my students are given lunch at school, they eat so early that by the end of the day all they can focus on is their growling belly.

My students have few enrichment opportunities in their community, so it is up to their teachers to provide learning experiences that they otherwise may not be exposed to.

When their learning is hands-on, my students are more engaged and their learning becomes more meaningful.

My Project

My students often ask if we can have snacks such as cookies, snack cakes, or potato chips in our classroom. Unfortunately, since our school is part of a healthy initiative, junk food is restricted even during special celebrations.

When I informed my students that snack time was not an option, they all wanted to know why.

I talked to them about better snack options and one student replied, "I don't want to eat junk food anymore because it's going to make me sick! Can we make our own healthy snacks?" Other students chimed in that their family members grew food such as peppers, tomatoes, cucumbers, etc., and that it was easy. That conversation inspired us to learn about growing our own foods. My kindergarten students want to be the first class to have their very own garden!

My students need books to learn all about gardening! They also need garden starter kits and gardening tools so we can begin an indoor garden. While they watch their garden grow, students also need healthier snacks available to them. My students also want to write all about what they are learning so they can go home and "teach" their families about bringing our foods from garden to table, but they need paper to be able to do so. The newsprint paper will allow them to write down what they are learning about nutrient dense foods in our class, so they can practice essential skills while taking an active role in their healthy living journey. The possibilities are endless!
