My Students

A typical day in my classroom sees me engaged with students in small or large group instruction at various times. But sometimes, I am busy working with one student who does not "get it" and needs more individualized instruction. Assistants can be seen offering help to students with other concerns.

My school is situated in the heart of Crown Heights in a high poverty area.

Almost 80% of the students receive free lunch. The student population at the moment is near 300 students, with a 26% representation of students with special needs. This year I have 12 incredible 4th and 5th grade students with academic functioning levels ranging from pre- k to early third grade. They are loving, highly active and creative at times. But what I admire about them the most is their high level of participation in whatever task we are engaged in. Three of my students are diagnosed as "otherwise health impaired" and require the utmost attention and care. They are remarkable. Their strength is not physical, but in their ability to capture the hearts of all their teachers with radiant smiles and a willingness to try. When my students say, "I did not eat lunch", or "I am hungry", I am torn, since I know that they cannot function well academically if they are felling undernourished. Snacks can help!

My Project

With the wellness program in our school our students have begun a journey of healthy lifestyles. The healthy snacks which I have requested will go a long way in promoting students' consciousness about what they should be putting in their bodies. I have applied for an array of snacks; pretzels, fruit snacks, granola bars, oats and honey bars,an assortment of juices, to name many in an attempt to open my students' eyes to the fact that there are healthier things to eat. I get very concerned when I see my students avoiding the breakfast and pulling out a bag of potato chips or drinking a soda instead , early in the morning. There are some students who never have snacks. Though ours is a classroom of sharing and giving, I feel their pain when they have nothing to offer. Last year more than half my class arrived by bus. The same is true for this year.Sometimes my students do not get a chance to eat breakfast and may come to class hungry. A supply of snacks would help solve this problem.

My classroom will be improved greatly.

Students will feel happier, knowing that there is something available for them whenever they fell hungry. Then they can approach their work with a better attitude. The fruit snacks will be used in math activities and the students will get to eat them later. The snacks can supplement the rewards system used. The snacks can remind students that we are what we eat. Students can look up the ingredients in the snacks and show how they are useful to their bodies.
