Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach science and social students to 6th, 7th and 8th graders. in a Title I school where 100% of the students receive free breakfast and lunch. My school is located in a high poverty area in Philadelphia.
Despite the struggles of some students not having daily nutritious meals and or healthy snacks, they still come to school willing and ready to learn.
I would like to ease some of the students nutritional needs by offering healthy snacks such as a variety of breakfast bars and other low calorie snacks to all the classes that I serve. These healthy snacks may help students stay focused and recharge their batteries when needed.
My Project
Working in a school in a low income area can be challenging for various reasons, one of which is the inability to focus because some of them may be hungry. There are some students who may not have eaten dinner the night before, which may cause them to lose focus because they are busy watching the clock waiting for lunch to begin. Our school day starts at 8:20 and their lunch period is at 1:45, which makes it is almost impossible to teach a lesson that they will pay attention to and stay focused on.
Students should be able come to school to concentrate on their education, instead of being distracted by hunger pangs.
I want to be able to provide my students with healthy, pick me up snacks, to help them stay focused throughout the day and or send some home snacks, when needed.
