This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Our UNITY Club, the school's diverse and ongoing Gender and Sexuality Alliance meets every Thursday after school to create more visibility, educate ourselves and share support for students who identify as LGBTQIA+, their friends, and allies. The school-based club snacks are often sparse or inadequate, and we want to join together without being distracted by hunger. Snacks are also a motivator to bring students into the club who may not have the financial means to buy their own after-school snacks. This year, we are focusing on increasing visibility and safety in our school -- which enrolls 100% newly arrived immigrants from many diverse cultures. Our strength is that we all understand how important it is to belong to a supportive community and to show compassion, allyship, and empathy to everyone, even when they have minority gender identities and/or sexual orientations.
