This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I have twenty-five amazing 4th grade students in my class who come to school eager to learn and challenge their thinking every day. Our school consists of children from a variety of different countries and cultures. I have students from India, Mexico, Vietnam, Ethiopia, El Salvador, and Honduras. Many of our students and parents are newcomers to America and are eager to learn English. My students end up being teachers for their parents and are often translating and teaching them what they are learning at school. Our students are happy and are working hard to embrace their new culture as well as maintain their own identities and cultures. Our school consists of 80% of our students qualifying for free and reduced-price lunch. However, we want to show them that poverty is not a deterrent to their learning capabilities.

My Project

We are in need of snacks for our classroom pantry. I work in a low-income area and our students don’t always have the ability to eat, something we often take for granted.

Many of my students are low-income and they have limited opportunities to healthy snacks, these snacks will help their grumbling stomachs and allow them to focus without thinking when is lunch time.

My students need to learn about healthy eating. The requested healthy snacks and bars, fruit snacks and nuts will provide them with nutritional information to help them make better food choices.

My school qualifies for a fruit/vegetable program that provides a limited amount of fruit once a day, Monday through Thursday. Each student gets 2-3 small portions of fruit. However, they don't receive any snacks on Friday. it's more like a tease for them because they almost always ask for more.

Many times students choose not to eat the fruit or vegetable and they go hungry until lunch. The snacks will help my students growing bodies and will also help them focus on learning.

80% of our students qualify for free or reduced lunch and these snacks and school lunches may be the only thing they eat all day.
