The pandemic has impacted all aspects of our lives, whether we care to admit it or not. One challenge I'm facing this year is building relationships with students who haven't had a "normal" school year since they were in middle school. It may sound crazy, but in some cases, educators are starting at ground zero. High school students have to relearn how to act in the hallways, when it's appropriate to ask to go to the bathroom, and how to sit in a classroom all day. It's not as easy as it sounds.
Any veteran teacher will tell you that the best way to prevent behavior problems in the classroom is to build relationships with their students.
I've discovered that the best way to start building relationships, especially with the toughest kids, is to give them a snack. Offering a granola bar or bag of Goldfish crackers instantly makes my students look at me differently. It's a physical reminder that I care and want them to do their best.
By donating to this project, you will not only help to fill a student's stomach, but you will start to open his heart. It sends the message that although the pandemic has made things hard, someone still cares.
