My Project

We love our 3rd grade class, but do they get hungry....and hangry! Our school district no longer provides a morning snack, so we have been relying on families to donate or we bring in snacks for the students. Over 75% of our school qualifies for free or reduced lunch, so it is hard for families to provide snacks everyday. Students can be irritable, less focused, and can't manage their hunger enough to complete school work, so this project will provide a huge impact on student learning.

Another part of this project is providing fun incentives and prizes for upcoming student test prep and state testing.

It is the first year of high stakes testing for 3rd graders and we want to make it enjoyable and less stressful. Chewing on mints or getting inspirational stickers will help create a more joyful environment. Also, one student in our class has an oral sensory need so the mints will help prevent her from chewing on pencils, erasers, or fidgets. It would be supportive for her to not be ashamed of her need, and get to try chewing on a mint to help her focus on her school work.

I want to give my students as much of a level playing field as possible, and having basic needs met like food is a huge part of that.
