I teach 6th, 7th and 8th grade middle school science in a high poverty school district.
Several of my students come to school late and have missed their morning breakfast and on the other end of the day, they are staying late and haven't brought a snack to hold them over until dinner.
As we all know it is very hard to function on an empty stomach.
My Project
I would love to provide my students with a healthy snack option that will hold them until lunch time or after school until dinner time by providing them with a bag of fruit snacks, a rice crispy treat or a bag of baked chips. This healthy snack will enable my students to make it until their next meal.
Research shows that learning is nearly impossible on an empty stomach.
And in this go, go, go generation children are often leaving the house late and without breakfast. The simple act of providing a healthy snack can put a child back on track and achieve success instead of dwelling on a growling stomach.
