This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
We are a Title I school in southern California. Most of my students come from low-income families, and many do not stay at the same school for more than a year. These students are shuffled from one school to the next due to overflow and bus restrictions. This contributes to an unbalanced education. Unfortunately, I can't do anything about those circumstances.
However, I can give these young learners a thirst for knowledge and the ability to use logic and communication to find information for themselves.
This is the first year we are teaching at a distance. This is going to be equally challenging for teachers, parents, and students. Our students are in first grade and have not had experience with technology and need a tremendous amount of support. Thank you for your help in making this transition as smooth as possible.
My Project
Many students come to school without basic care like brushed hair and teeth, clothes that fit, clean hands, or band-aids for scrapes.
These items are some of the most commonly needed throughout the year.
They are small enough to be dispersed discreetly without embarrassment and shame.
Socks can help when students have shoes that are too big or rub a spot that causes pain. They can also provide more warmth in colder weather for students who don't wear any. Toothbrushes, toothpaste, and timers can help with dental hygiene and reduce the number of absences for cavities and abscessed teeth. Sanitizers can be attached to backpacks so students can have clean hands before they eat at home. While lip balm is not an essential item, it helps keep students from licking their lips raw in dry weather.
Kids can't learn if they don't have their basic needs met. If they are uncomfortable, in pain, hungry, or embarrassed they will not be able to concentrate or focus on schoolwork.
