Growing up as a child, our parents would say "eat your vegetables!" We didn't always understand the significance of eating the right foods as children, but as adults we know that teaching health, science, and physical education are some important issues students need to ensure a great future.
When you were growing when did you learn about the importance of good nutrition?
Was there someone who taught about the about the difference between foods that you may like as opposed to foods that are good for your mind and body? These are the struggles for my students. My students need help learning about healthy foods and good nutrition. Many of them struggle with good nutrition and they do not understand the correlation between a healthy diet and being successful in school. Our school started a garden three years ago. My goal is to teach students that growing and eating their own food is not only healthy, but can also be fun.
My Project
Technology is the wave of the future. My goal is to give my students both technology and lessons on how to be and keep healthy throughout their lives. This goal can be reached using iPads. With iPads in my classroom, students will be able access apps that will teach them about food, nutrition, and growing healthy foods in our school garden as well as researching healthy foods and ways to grow them. Some of the apps will include Dr. Panda's Veggie Garden, Create a Meal, and Market Garden. I believe that this will not only impact my students now, but it will impact them for life. I will also use the iPads to keep a pictorial history of our learning journey.
I would like to ensure that my students are given every opportunity to learn and grow. By using iPads in my classroom I will guarantee them that chance. I want them to begin to understand how we grow food and its importance to having a healthy body and a healthy life.
Although children come from different backgrounds there is one thing that brings them together.
That one thing is food. Most of my life I have heard the old saying "ÃÂÃÂgive a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime." I would like to be able to put a little twist on this saying. Take a child out to eat and he eats for that moment. Teach a child to plant and grow his own food and you will have a health conscience farmer for a lifetime.
