This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Junk food and bad ads are everywhere! What's a kid to do? Join the Healthy Heroes Garden Club! Four classes are growing the school garden and preparing fresh foods. Internet resources are needed to bring lessons to life and to help the kids and their families make healthy choices.

The children in our school are from families that face day-to-day economic hardships.

In addition, the kids also have to learn in a language that is not their home language. Despite these many challenges, our students and their families are motivated to learn! The diligence of students, parents, and teachers has led our school to an "A" state rating for 12 years running.

My Project

Our main goal for our school garden is to provide children and their parents with a hands-on experience that they will apply daily and for the rest of their lives. The second basic laptop we're requesting will help an additional forty students and their parents directly connect and apply garden experiences to daily health and nutrition choices. For example, last season we had a bumper crop of kale, chard and mustard greens. Teachers, students and parents had no idea how to prepare them! Using Internet resources such as recipes and preparation demonstration videos, four classes, parents and teachers all learned how to remove the rib and roll the kale into a cigar shape before slicing. 150 people had their first taste of greens that day! Many families have reported integrating greens into their family meals since. After learning how to do it from the computer and with the group, the greens became an doable new food choice.

One out of two Latino children born since 2000 will develop diabetes.

Parents and children need experiences and information to change this unfortunate fact and to live productive and healthy lives. Our project will increase knowledge of and access to the fresh fruits and vegetables that the CDC recommends will reduce obesity and diabetes.
