My Project
Incorporating Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) into everyday learning in first grade has tremendous benefits. SEL improves academic performance, reduces behavioral problems, and promotes a positive classroom climate for all students.
I empower my students to navigate challenges, build healthy relationships, and thrive both inside and outside the classroom.
Part of my job is to equip children with the ability to understand and manage their emotions, build positive relationships, and make responsible decisions, ultimately promoting a more positive and successful learning environment.
I take great pride in my ability to connect with my students and help them de-escalate when necessary. Using literature and storytelling to teach SEL concepts is a valuable tool. I would love to enhance my library with age-appropriate SEL-themed books that focus on relevant first-grade topics, such as friendship, empathy, kindness, and emotions. These books would be a wonderful addition as well as the spot characters for children to reference as a visual within the class for all learners as well as those who may not be able to linguistically express themselves.
We are also seeing an increase in anxiety with our little ones. It is important to me that I can help ease this anxiety with my students to allow for a successful learning experience. The Hugimals are wonderful tools that are developmentally appropriate and would be a great addition to my calming corner. I know they would make a huge difference with my children to help provide sensory and emotional support when needed while I may be teaching and cannot immediately provide it. These little aids will provide the heavy hug and comfort a child may be craving in their time of need to help ease any anxiousness.
