Healthy Hands and School Supplies!

My Students

My students love coming to school on that first day and seeing their desks with brand new school supplies already set out waiting for them. They love having new notebooks and freshly sharpened pencils that don't break every time they put them down on the page. Every kid deserves that feeling!

My students are exuberant learners, who come to school with a smile despite the tough home situations that many of them come from.

Most of my 3rd graders walk to school each day, in a neighborhood that has had more murders than any other neighborhood in our great city of Chicago. Despite the challenges they face, my students persevere and all have goals to attend college. They are children who crave knowledge and positive relationships, and they are active learners who like to experience learning first-hand. While I do send out a school supply list at the beginning of the year, I rarely have many families who can afford to invest the money into supporting their child's classroom. Instead parents often volunteer to help out, because even though they can't monetarily assist, they love to support the work that the school does for their child and their community. While this volunteer support is extremely welcomed, I often spend $600 or more of my own money to set up my class each year.

My Project

One of the easiest ways to ensure that my students are learning, and always have a high quality education available to them is to make sure that they are healthy! Sickness spreads quickly in our small classroom with 25 bodies sharing the same space, so it is essential that my classroom be a clean, germ-free space. The hand sanitizing gel is used all day long in my classroom, and my students are always in the habit of using it after every sneeze or bathroom break. Because of this, we go through a lot! Often times, by the end of the year I end up begging parents to send it in. To relieve parents of this burden I am asking for enough hand sanitizer to last through the year. In addition, by providing basic school supplies to my students, such as pencils and dry erase markers, they will be able to participate in learning actively. They can use the dry erase markers to work on their boards in small group lessons, and always have a pencil ready that won't break as soon as they try to write.

When my students walk in to their classroom this year, I don't want for them or their families to have to be financially burdened.

I want them to have the freedom and peace of mind to focus on their education, becoming better readers, mathematicians, scientists, and historians. I want them to be at school everyday, and not home sick. By receiving the items on this list, all of these things will be possible!
