Healthy Growing, Cooking And Eating!

My students need seeds, a classroom greenhouse, books, and root view gardens so that they can explore plant growth, growing healthy food, and learn about food harvesting.

My Students

With the ease of fast-food choices, and the convenience of frozen, canned or prepared foods, it is often difficult to develop truly healthy eating habits. Even more alarming, is that many children simply don't know where the fruits and vegetables in their store originate! It's time for action!

My students are inquisitive.

They are inspiring, energetic and eager. They arrive in the morning ready to challenge me, and it is my hope every day to challenge them! Many of them come from low-income families and are on a free or reduced lunch program. Most come from either homes where both parents work, possibly more than one job each, or where they have a single parent who is working and raising children alone. Despite those challenges, my families and their children know we will move through the course of the year with an environment of love, support, encouragement, respect and a mutual quest for learning!

My Project

Our garden project blends seamlessly into our daily routine, giving the children knowledge about nutrition, providing opportunities to read, write, calculate, measure, weigh, evaluate, predict, plan, collaborate, observe and finally, to draw conclusions. The requested items will be used to grow plants from seed in our classroom greenhouse, transplant them to our larger garden, and to nurture them through to harvest while we learn about proper nutrition and plant growth. When the garden is harvested, we will utilize our harvested items in our classroom kitchen, preparing healthy dishes in class for the students to eat and critique!

This project can truly be life changing.

We will seek out healthy alternatives to break bad eating habits, and will embark on a quest to build healthy life-long eating habits that will benefit not only these children, but their friends and families as well! At the end of the year, we will produce a Healthy Eating Handbook with all of our recipes and healthy snack ideas that were used throughout the year, promoting a continued healthy-eating lifestyle.
