This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My classroom currently consists of 20 amazing and eager 7th thru 12th grade art students. During a normal year these students would be coming into the classroom each day ready to learn and needing to feel important. Many of these students come from low-income families that have been hit particularly hard by the events of this past year.
77% of the our school's population is designated as socioeconomically disadvantaged and 25% receive services as English Language Learners.
My class consist of students of many different learning abilities, languages and nationalities. All students are ready to work together and prepare for their future.
My Project
The 20/21 school year has shown us all the need to adapt and be creative. While some of my students will be returning to the classroom soon, many families are choosing to continue remote learning. Our school has seen several families struggle with this decision due to the loss of family members to COVID-19. I want to ensure that all of our students are afforded the same tools whether at home or returning to in person learning.
Giving these kids tools to express their feelings and ideas will support their learning in all their studies as well as providing support for their mental health.
By providing these art kits, my students will begin to see themselves as true artists. We will use these materials to aide us in the process of healthy expression. As a teacher and artist, I have done extensive research and reading on the impact of art on mental health and academic achievement. I truly need your support to make this a reality. Thank you!
