Healthy Cooking: Walk Wok!

My students need cooking utensils and ingredients for an intensive cooking class. Our school does not have a cafeteria so an electric wok, and burners are essential.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

This is a three-week session, where we will work with students for the whole day. Students will be engaged in different cooking lessons and learn how to eat healthy food.

ARISE High School is a small college preparatory charter school with vibrant, energetic urban youth.

Located in the Fruitvale District, our whole school teach all low-income, students of color. 95% of them qualify for free and reduced lunch. In a community plagued by fatty, sugary fast food places, students usually go to the corner stores to buy food and snacks. It is our hope that students will have access to affordable and healthy food. Not only will students be able to learn about healthy food options, but it is our goal that students will learn how to prepare delicious, healthy food for themselves.

My Project

We will teach basic cooking recipes from multicultural traditions. In order to cook affordable, healthy food, we will get our groceries from farmer markets and local markets. Students will have the opportunity to learn about the different vegetables, herbs and how to make healthy food! Since we don't have a school kitchen, we need portable appliances to add to our toaster oven and microwave. Every day, we will learn a new recipe and cook them together. We will invite families and school members to be "guest teachers" in the cooking class, where they will have the opportunity to teach the students how to cook their favorite food. Aside from learning how to cook, we will go on picnics, create community meals and practice Math by using measuring cups. Students will also create their own cook books, so they can gather their favorite recipes. At the end of the three-week session, students will showcase what they've learned to the community by teaching them how to cook a healthy meal.

Our students will gain a full-semester elective credit from this class.

Your donations will allow us to have access to cooking utensils, since we don't have any at our school. We believe in the idea of "health is wealth", it is extremely for students to learn how and where they can access affordable, healthy food in the community. By having the supplies to cook healthy food, students will learn to live a healthy lifestyle by choosing what they put into their bodies.
