This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

How did you learn to eat right and make your own meals? For many of my students, their parents work nights and there is no one at home to teach them how to make their own meals. They tend to eat junk food instead, like chips or other snacks.

My students live in an urban area in which there is a great deal of fast food.

They are from low-income families in which there is often not someone at home to make a nutritious meal. When asked, they express concerns about wanting to eat better, but many of them don't know how to make their own healthy meals and snacks. This project, helped by FEED USA, will help our students to learn how to fend for themselves in terms of healthy eating.

My Project

We already have a healthy cooking class up and running. We use supplies at our school for this program. Students love the class and take what they learn home to make meals for their families. However, we lack cookbooks and a blender. With a blender, we can teach how to make healthy dips like hummus or how to make all-fruit smoothies. With cookbooks, we can have our students browse and use the recipes in the class and at home to supplement their new healthier diets.

This program is already quite successful, but this project will help us to have a broader impact on students' lives.

Students will learn to read recipes on their own and will be empowered to continue to eat healthily for the rest of their lives.
