I teach middle school science at a large Illinois elementary school. My students are from low-income families and are eligible for free lunch. As a teacher and lover of science, I want to instill my love for healthy living in my students.
Choices Magazine gives students the life skills they need to stay healthy, safe, and in control.
Unfortunately, we don’t have any text books related to health or fitness. In addition, because of cuts in my school's budget, we are unable to purchase science resources. In addition to budget cuts, we were told by the school board to expect classes of 35 students, further cutting into our meager resources. Most of my students do not have computers with Internet access at home, or parents to take them to the library to find current articles. I would love to be able to have a learning aid that would allow me to teach my students about cutting edge health discoveries and age-appropriate strategies for subscribing to a healthy lifestyle.
My Project
I currently subscribe to Choices Magazine and my students argue about which one will get to read the magazines 1st, 2nd, 3rd, etc. If you fund my project, my students will not have to argue over who will read the magazines first because they will each have a copy. With the Choices Magazines, I will be able to bring thought-provoking, age-appropriate news stories into my daily lessons. Choices' health articles present nonfiction information relating to teen health issues too new for textbooks. I will be able to share healthy food alternatives, counteracting the unhealthy food choices many of my students select. This magazine also will give my students tips on making fitness fun and effective.
Essential life skills, healthy living, reducing stress and staying focused are also lessons to help my students’ overall well-being.
This project is also important because minorities and women are underrepresented in the field of science. By introducing my students to the fascinating field of health science, their interest in science will grow and perhaps one day they will become scientists themselves. My students and I will be greatly appreciative if you are able to fund my project!
